Decoding the cannabis alphabet.
What’s the difference between THC and CBD? Indica and sativa? Cannabis may have its own lingo, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. We put together our own Cannabis Alphabet to break down the most commonly referred to concepts, products, and accessories.
Ashtray – a common receptacle for detritus born of a lit joint. Retro collectible now obsolete thanks to advances in vaporization technology.
Bowl – another term for the humble pipe. “Bowl” can also be used to describe its contents.
Cannabidiol – CBD. A cannabinoid (another “C,” here describing a kind of active chemical component found in the cannabis plant) known for its alleged anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-anxiety properties. CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it doesn’t get you “high.” There’s a reason Gwyneth Paltrow is telling you to spike smoothies with it.
Endocannabinoid System – the biological system that contains your cannabinoid receptors, allowing cannabis to work its magic.
Hybrid – a strain that’s equal parts indica and sativa.
Indica – one of two main types of cannabis. Indica strains are known for their sedative, “in da couch” effects.
Joint – the proper term for a “marijuana cigarette.”
Lighter – integral to set cannabis aflame. More practical than a match.
Munchies – once a term reserved for convenience store snacks, we’re reclaiming munchies to include superfood smoothies, charcuterie plates, and veggie sticks (and bags of chips…).
Ounce – a (sizeable) quantity in which to purchase cannabis.
Pairings – the art of combining one thing with another thing. Like cannabis and coffee. Or cannabis and chocolate. Or cannabis and cheese. Or cannabis and…
Queen – what every woman is, natch. This is a female plant!
Relaxation – an ideal activity with which to pair with cannabis. To get more specific, we suggest: taking a bath, going for a walk, window-shopping, reading a novel, moisturizing, exfoliating, yoga, finding the perfect present for someone, calling your mom…
Sativa – one of two main types of cannabis. Sativa strains are the coffee of cannabis, upbeat and energetic.
Tetrahydrocannabinol – THC. This is the cannabinoid responsible for cannabis’s signature effects.
Vaporizer – a device that heats up your cannabis to high temperatures, allowing you to inhale the resultant vapor without actually combusting the plant.
Water pipe – a chic, more subtle way to say “bong.”
Yoga – a classic, centering workout that pairs well with cannabis.
